An office move in New York City with Moishe’s starts at $1,200 for a small office of up to 10 employees and at $1,800 for a medium office of 11 to 20 employees. Moves of 21 or more employees get a customized flat-rate quote after one of our commercial project managers assesses the job.
Those are starting prices, and the final number depends on what is inside the office and on how the two buildings handle a move. This guide breaks down what sets the price, the costs that never appear on a moving quote, what New York law says about who can move an office, and how to get a quote you can actually budget against.
Office move prices in NYC by office size
Moishe’s prices office moves in three tiers based on headcount: from $1,200 for up to 10 employees, from $1,800 for 11 to 20 employees, and a custom flat-rate quote for 21 or more. Headcount is the starting point because it tracks the number of workstations, which is what takes the crew time.
| Office size | Moishe’s price (2026) | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Small office, up to 10 employees | Starting at $1,200 | The number of cubicles and workstations, and how much packing you need |
| Medium office, 11 to 20 employees | Starting at $1,800 | The office setup and the packing requirements |
| Large commercial move, 21 or more employees | Customized flat-rate quote | A commercial project manager assesses the move and builds a complete relocation plan |
“Starting at” is the floor for a straightforward move of that size. Two offices with the same headcount can price differently: one with open desks and laptops is a lighter job than one with assembled cubicles, a file room and a server closet.
For larger offices, the quote is built around a plan rather than a rate. The project manager walks the space, maps what moves and in what order, and prices the whole relocation as one flat number. Moishe’s handles commercial relocations of all sizes, from small offices to large corporate moves, on our commercial moving service.
What drives the cost of an office move
The biggest cost drivers in an NYC office move are the number of workstations and cubicles, how much packing the crew does, the IT equipment, and the access rules at both buildings. Timing and storage come next. Each one changes the crew size, the hours, or both.
Ask anyone who has run an office move in Manhattan what blew the budget, and it is rarely the truck. It is the cubicle system nobody measured, the building that only allows moves after 6 p.m., or the server that had to wait for the IT contractor. None of those show up in a headcount, which is why a walk-through matters more than the tier.
Workstations, cubicles and furniture systems
Systems furniture has to be taken apart, labeled, moved and rebuilt, which adds crew time at both ends of the move. Our crews disassemble and reassemble the major systems furniture brands, and the count of cubicles and workstations is the first thing the estimate looks at. Freestanding desks and chairs are quicker.
Packing
Packing is the line you control most. If the crew packs files, supplies and shared areas, the hours go up; if employees pack their own desks before move day, they go down. A common split: staff handle personal items, and the movers pack what is fragile, heavy or shared.
IT equipment
Workstations, monitors, servers and network gear need careful packing and a plan for reconnection. We work with your technical staff to pack, transport and reposition servers, switches and workstations. Network setup, server configuration and any new cabling usually sit with your IT team or IT vendor, so budget for their time too.
Building access at both ends
NYC commercial buildings often control when and how a move happens: set move hours, freight elevator bookings, a certificate of insurance (COI) naming the building, and sometimes union requirements. A tight window or a shared freight elevator can mean a larger crew to finish on time. Ask both buildings for their rules in writing and share them with the estimator.
Timing: after hours and weekends
Moving outside business hours costs your team less downtime, and some buildings require it anyway. Moishe’s offers after-hours and weekend moves so the work week stays intact. Ask how the timing is reflected in the quote, so you can weigh it against the cost of a lost workday.
Storage and phased moves
If the new space is not ready, or you are moving in stages, part of the inventory has to wait somewhere. Our commercial storage holds archives and other business assets during a phased move or renovation, which adds a storage line but can save a second rushed move.
Office relocation costs that are not on the moving quote
A moving quote covers the crew, the truck and the services you book. The full office relocation cost also includes IT setup, internet service at the new address, secure disposal of old records, electronics recycling and the staff time the move takes. Put these in the budget early, because they add up.
- IT setup and cabling. Network and phone setup, server configuration and any new cabling at the new address are usually handled and billed by your IT vendor.
- Internet at the new space. Order service for the new address well before move day, since the provider sets the installation date, and our NYC office move checklist puts it on the timeline early.
- Old paper records. Files you are not taking still have to be disposed of properly. Under New York General Business Law section 399-h, a business disposing of records that contain personal identifying information must shred them, destroy the information, make it unreadable, or use accepted industry practices, and a violation can bring a civil penalty of up to $5,000.
- Old electronics. Computers, peripherals and small-scale servers fall under New York’s electronic waste recycling program. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, manufacturers must recycle them for free for businesses with fewer than 50 full-time employees, while businesses with 50 or more full-time employees may be charged.
- Staff time and downtime. Packing desks, meetings with the building and a slow first day back all cost hours. A weekend or after-hours move keeps most of that off the work week.
Do office movers in New York need a license?
Yes. New York law treats office furniture, fixtures and equipment as household goods, so a company moving them within the state must hold a certificate from the New York State Department of Transportation. Check the mover’s NYSDOT number before you sign.
The definition is in section 2 of the New York Transportation Law, which includes the furniture, fixtures and equipment of offices, stores, hospitals and similar establishments in its definition of “household goods.” Section 191 then bars anyone from carrying household goods within the state without a certificate from the commissioner. In practice, this means an office move from Midtown to Brooklyn falls under the same state oversight as a home move.
A licensed mover prints its numbers where you can find them. Moishe’s NYSDOT number, 12853, and our US DOT number, 587098, appear at the bottom of every page of our site.
How to get an accurate office moving quote
An accurate office moving quote comes from a walk-through, not a phone call. Give the estimator a full inventory, the rules of both buildings, your target date and how much downtime you can accept. With that, the quote reflects the real job instead of a headcount.
- Book a consultation. Our commercial moves start with a free, in-depth consultation that covers your inventory and timeline. For 21 or more employees, a commercial project manager does the assessment.
- Count what moves. Workstations, cubicles, conference furniture, file cabinets, servers and anything heavy or fragile.
- Collect the building rules. Move hours, freight elevator booking, loading dock access and COI requirements, from both the current and the new building.
- Decide what stays behind. Items you discard, donate or store should be off the moving list before the quote, not after.
- Ask how the price is set. A flat rate fixes the price for the agreed job; an hourly rate depends on the clock. Our guide to hourly vs flat rate movers explains the difference.
How to lower your office move cost
The cheapest way to cut an office move cost is to move less and prepare more: clear out what you do not need before the estimate, have staff pack their own desks, book building windows early, and plan the IT work as its own track. Each step removes crew hours.
- Declutter before the walk-through. Every desk, cabinet and box you do not move is one you do not pay to pack, carry and set up. Our guide on getting rid of old furniture covers donation and disposal options.
- Let employees pack personal items. Give each person boxes, labels and a deadline a few days before the move.
- Book building windows early. Freight elevator slots and move hours fill up, and a late booking can force a smaller window and a bigger crew.
- Keep IT on its own timeline. Order internet, schedule your IT vendor and back up systems before move day, so the movers are not waiting on reconnection.
- Store instead of rushing. If the new space is late, storing part of the inventory is often cheaper than paying for two compressed moves.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to move a small office in NYC?
With Moishe’s, a small office of up to 10 employees starts at $1,200. The final price depends on the number of cubicles and workstations and on how much packing you need. A medium office of 11 to 20 employees starts at $1,800, depending on the office setup and packing requirements.
How are large office moves priced?
For 21 or more employees, Moishe’s sends one of its commercial project managers to assess the move. The project manager develops a complete relocation plan and provides a customized flat-rate quote, so the price is set for the whole job before move day.
Do office movers need a license in New York?
Yes. New York Transportation Law counts office furniture, fixtures and equipment as household goods, and a mover carrying household goods within the state needs a certificate from the New York State Department of Transportation. Check the mover’s NYSDOT number before you sign a contract.
Can an office move in NYC happen after hours or on a weekend?
Yes. Moishe’s offers after-hours and weekend moves so the work week is not interrupted, and some NYC commercial buildings require moves outside business hours anyway. Confirm the allowed move hours and freight elevator booking with both buildings before you set the date.
What office move costs are not included in a moving quote?
A moving quote covers the crew, truck and booked services. It usually does not include network setup and cabling by your IT vendor, internet installation at the new address, secure shredding of old records, electronics recycling fees for businesses with 50 or more full-time employees, or the staff time spent preparing for the move.
