Why Brooklyn Heights Moves Are Different
Brooklyn Heights is Brooklyn Community District 2, bounded by Old Fulton Street, Cadman Plaza West, Atlantic Avenue and the waterfront. The 1965 designation record counted 1,284 buildings fronting on streets in the district, at least 1,078 of them built before 1900 and at least 684 before the Civil War, including 405 Greek Revival and 60 Federal houses and 61 early carriage houses.
High Stoops and Interior Stair Carries
Most Brooklyn Heights houses are three or four story rowhouses where the main floor sits above street level, reached by an exterior stoop. Furniture goes up and over the stoop, then through a narrow interior staircase. There is no elevator and no way around it. We protect the stoop, the railings and the parlor floor, and we size the crew to the carry rather than to the square footage.
New York City's First Historic District
Designated 23 November 1965, before any other district in the city. The designation explicitly protects against alterations including removal of front steps, so the stoop cannot be modified to make a move easier. Almost No Truck Route Inside the Neighborhood
The designated routes here are Atlantic Avenue, Court Street, Cadman Plaza West, Furman Street and Tillary Street, all on the edges. Montague, Clinton, Henry, Willow, Columbia Heights, Pierrepont, Remsen, Joralemon and the fruit streets are none of them. Every Brooklyn Heights address is a last-block problem: the truck stays on a designated route until the corner nearest your door, then makes one direct approach.

Alongside the rowhouses, the eastern edge and the waterfront hold pre-war co-ops and modern condo buildings that require a Certificate of Insurance before granting access. We prepare and submit the Certificate of Insurance (COI) directly to building management and reserve any elevator or move window in advance.
From the Fruit Streets to Atlantic Avenue
The north Heights, across Cranberry, Orange, Pineapple, Clark, Middagh, Willow and Hicks, is the smaller-house end of the neighborhood on short blocks near the Brooklyn Bridge. The workable approach is usually from Cadman Plaza West.
The mansion belt, along Pierrepont, Remsen and Columbia Heights, holds what the Landmarks Preservation Commission itself called the large mansions of the district. Widest floorplates, deepest houses, tallest stoops and the longest carries. These blocks back directly onto the Promenade, which is a pedestrian walkway cantilevered over the expressway with no vehicle access at any point along its 1,826 feet.
Montague Street is the commercial spine, apartments above storefronts, where loading competes with retail deliveries all day. The south Heights, across Joralemon, State, Willow Place, Garden Place and Sidney Place, has the narrowest access in the district and is best served from Atlantic Avenue. The carriage house mews scattered through it were built as stables and are correspondingly tight.
Below the bluff, Furman Street and Brooklyn Bridge Park are modern high-rise condominium stock with loading docks and service elevators, a completely different move from the houses above. Furman Street is itself a designated local truck route.
