Save on bubble wrap
If you’re from a coastal city such as New York, breakout your seasonal puffy coats for your breakables (glasses, plates, glass Tupperware etc). Incorporate newspaper, coregulated cardboard, clothes and towels as buffers for the potentially bumpy ride. However, be careful with the newspaper with certain items, as the ink can bleed onto some possessions.
Garbage Bags for the Win
If you utilize hangers in your closet space, you can use garbage liners with drawstrings and just drape it upwards over your clothes. Save yourself the stress and time when you get to your new place and you can just hang everything back without the extra work!
Forgetting Which Hole That Goes Into
Before thinning out your patience (and possibly your hairline) further, save yourself the migraine and snap a picture of how your electronics are wired with your smartphone so you have some kind of a blueprint for the set-up later on. Remember to label your wires individually for which appliance it belongs to as well.
If you don’t do this, then be sure to have a bottle of Ibuprofen and an ice pack handy as you unpack.
Set Aside an Overnight Bag/Box of Essentials
This includes a change of clothes for your first night when you arrive. And don’t kid yourself—you’ll be as exhausted as a jet-lagged passenger after an eight-hour flight. Set aside travel-sized toiletries and a spare towel because you’ll be breaking in your new bathroom by the first night. Separate your phone charger from the rest of the wires and cables you may have packed away in your electronics boxes.
And don’t be embarrassed to pack a spare roll of toilet paper in your bag or box—chances are, you’re going to break in that new throne of yours and you’ll be cursing under your breath when you can’t find anything within the wiping vicinity.
After moving all those boxes, you’ll be physically and mentally-taxed to be able to function the rest of the night. Have some cash set aside so that you can tip your movers or when you order food because how much energy would you realistically have left to cook a full meal?
