Summer Storage Tips

Use self storage to clear clutter and make room for summer guests.

The sun is shining, the heat is rising, and it’s time to get outside and enjoy the summer season. It’s also the time of year when family and friends visit your home, and you’ll want to clear out clutter to make room for house guests.

Self storage is a convenient and safe solution for putting winter gear and other unnecessary items out of the way, but the warm weather can pose some challenges.

Check out these tips for preserving your stored items this summer:

  • If storing clothing, be sure garments have been cleaned first. Food stains and body oils can not only set in over time, but can also invite bugs and moths to dine on your clothing.
  • Be sure your storage unit is dry, dark and cool. If you are storing sensitive items such as furs or artwork, you may want to consider climate-controlled storage to avoid heat or moisture damage.
  • Let your garments breathe. Clothing should not be stored in airtight containers–a lack of ventilation can trap moisture and cause mildew or yellowing. Use ventilated garment boxes to protect clothing while allowing proper airflow.
  • Consider cedar chips or lavender blocks instead of moth balls. The smell of moth balls is much harder to remove from clothing. If you do use moth balls, don’t let them directly touch clothing, rather, place them on top of boxes and let the fumes filter down.
  • If you are storing your winter sports items, make sure you prepare and wax the bases of skis and snowboards before storage. Keep them up off the floor and then they should be in usable condition come the next winter.

Now that you’ve protected your storage items and cleaned up your home, it’s time to get out and play!
