How much do you tip a mover?

Our clients often ask us whether it’s customary to tip their movers for their work. Many of us in New York City and the Tri-State Area are comfortable with tipping taxi drivers, restaurant servers, and hair stylists. People wonder if they should tip their movers in the same way.

The short answer: yes, tipping is common. As you will soon find out, moving is hard work. Tipping is a great way to say thank you to your movers for doing a great job, but it is never an obligation and remains entirely up to you.

We’re confident you will be impressed with your movers from Moishe’s, and we think you will want to show them that you appreciate their work at the end of the day. Our staff is reliable, careful, courteous, and strong. They not only do all the heavy lifting, they work with the highest standards of professionalism and service in the moving industry.

There’s no standard formula for tipping. Most of our customers choose to tip their movers from 10% to 15% on the total cost of the move, calculating the gratuity in the way they would at a restaurant. If your move involves a lot of packing, you might add to the tip when you see how carefully they work. If your move involves steep stairways and delicate choreography to get from door to door, you might be inspired to tip the movers for their fancy footwork. If the high cost of your move is due to fuel for the truck, you should take that into account when calculating gratuity. You have the right to set the standard.

It’s a good idea to split any tip between the movers and thank them individually. That could mean giving each $20 for a short job of three to four hours, or from to $50 or $100 each at the end of the day. The amount you want to tip should depend on the size, complexity, and duration of the move. They will certainly be grateful for your appreciation. If you need documentation for tax purposes, a personal check should do the trick. We never include gratuity in our estimates or invoices.

Our movers are not entitled to a tip and our rules don’t allow them to ask for one. Who wants that stress at the end of a long day? At Moishe’s, we take care of our family when they take care of yours. We pay them good wages to make sure that we have the best people on our crews, and they are always insured against injury.
