Earth-friendly Alternatives to Moving Boxes
Boxes are great for moving—you can purchase the exact number and sizes that you need and carry everything from your old apartment to your new home safely. For some, however, the idea of using cardboard moving boxes and then ditching them is not environmentally sound. If you’re one of those looking to reduce your carbon footprint, here are some alternatives to using just boxes:
Suitcases are the perfect container for transporting goods—that’s what they’re for after all. So pack up your clothes, papers and even kitchen items in your suitcases. If your luggage has wheels all the better! It will make transport that much easier.
The best thing about using dresser drawers is that you can transport your items as they are without having to pack them. If not too heavy, you can leave them in the dresser and just tape the drawers closed so things don’t fall out. Otherwise you can take the drawers out and wrap in plastic; then carry them to the new space.
If you’re an environmentally conscious person you probably have a lot of these canvas and cloth bags. Why not put them to good use and pack your knick-knacks, small accessories, and such in them?
Just like tote bags, backpacks, briefcases and any other kind of bag in the house can be used for relocating your items. These are especially good for lighter items like scarves, gloves, and hats. But other than capacity, there’s no limit as to what you can stuff in there.
Hampers and laundry baskets are not just for dirty clothes. They also work for carrying clean clothes, shoes, breakables like plates and glasses. Just make sure to wrap all breakables in clothes, bubble wrap, or newspapers.
Have a coffee table with drawers, or an ottoman with storage? Use these double-duty pieces to carry things like sweaters, throws, remote controls, and other accessories as you see fit.
