The Self Storage Association

If you're currently planning to rent off-site storage space in the near future, the Self Storage Association (SSA for short), has a deep well of helpful information on the rental process available on their website. It's geared mostly towards storage facility owners, but nothing is better for a customer than to understand how an industry works on the other side of the fence. Reading up on the latest trends and needs in the Self Storage industry is a great way to get the most out of your rental space. One of the most interesting sections of their website is the Industry Statistics page, chalk full of info about the outrageous number of storage centers currently operating and the percentage of Americans who invest in self storage each year.

Understanding Self Storage

I just finished reading a brief, informative article on the benefits of renting self storage. The article, on BestSyndication.com, breaks down their case into three main categories - that it's a DIY solution, that it is a completely flexible experience and that it's secure and hassle free. Check out a brief excerpt from the column, then follow the link above to see the entire piece.

"With the world moving at an increasingly dizzying pace, people are looking to simplify and de-clutter their lives as much as possible. This trend is illustrated in the popular television shows that help people clean out and organize their belongings. One thing that these shows prove--it seems that it becoming harder for people to manage the space they rent, own or lease. And that's exactly why many are turning to self storage as a solution."

Using Moishe's Mobile Storage for Home Renovations

Renovating your home can be a painful and expensive process. Between money for materials, cost of construction labor and arguing over the new design, driving miles away to store a single room’s displaced furniture is the last thing you need worry over. let Moishe’s Mobile storage make things a little easier on your eyes and your wallet. Have one of our portable storage units delivered to your home so you can keep all your belongings close at hand, but out of your way.

Here are a few helpful restoration storage tips from Moishe’s Mobile to get your restoration off on the right foot.

When renovating your home room by room, use a Moishe’s Mobile storage container as a temporary room-replacement. Instead of forcing yourself into a rush by shuffling all your furniture into the hallway or stacking and covering it in the center of the room, store the furniture in a Moishe’s Mobile storage unit and move at a pace you can handle.

The key to making the room by room strategy work is having a carefully thought-out attack plan. When remodeling a multi-story house, always work from the top down. That way, carrying furniture to and from your storage container doesn’t scuff and scratch your pristine new walls or carpet.

Next, if you have two smaller rooms close together, clear them out at the same time. Our storage units have more than enough space and clearing both rooms allows you to split-up the work and finish the work faster. Just make sure that when packing things away, you color-code the furniture and contents of both rooms. The process is easy; all you need is a ball of twine and a pair of color markers.

One of the beauties of using a Moishe’s Mobile storage container instead of off-site storage is that your stuff always stays just outside your house. Since you’re not packing everything into the car and driving it across town, you save a lot of time not boxing every little knick-knack. Most household items are perfectly safe in your song without any boxing at all. Only fragile or breakable items need to be individually packaged when you store them.

Two Steppin' to Tennessee (not my title)

Moishe's Self Storage is proud to announce they will be attending this years Inside Self Storage Convention in Nashville Tennessee. This year's convention should be a lot of fun, chalk-full of helpful information, lectures on the state of the storage industry as a whole and overloaded with companies looking to get ahead of the game. There's a great article up on the ISS website that discusses not only the events set to take place at the convention, but also a historical background of the host city and things to do while you're in town. If any of our readers plan on being in attendance, or if you happen to live in the area, be sure to check out the article. It's a good read with a lot of interesting information.

Looking for Storage

Looking for a storage facility near your home town? Unfortunately, Moishe's doesn't have locations in every city across the country, but we can provide you with a few tips on finding a reliable storage provider that's convenient and meets all of your needs. Here's a few tips to keep in mind when looking for the right company to store your belongings.

Before you start to look for a storage company, think about why you need one.

• Are you looking for simple, short-term storage?
• Do you need flexibility and 24/7 accessibility?
• Do your goods require specific temperature or climate control?

Make sure that you understand what you are looking for – and then, do some practical, comparative shopping.

You can find storage companies in the yellow pages, online or through word-of-mouth referrals from friends. Select at least three that are conveniently located to serve your needs.

Then, visit the facilities – and check them out, considering the following:

1. Convenience: At each facility, check out the security, cleanliness and availability of the space you require.

2. Price: When you consider price, don’t forget to find out if the company will provide free pick-up, a free move or free truck. Make sure that you get a complete breakdown of all applicable charges; and make sure that there are no “hidden” charges. These can include: monthly deposit, lock and key charge, and electricity usage among others.

3. Customer Service: Good storage involves more than square footage and decent lighting. The best facilities will provide you with quality customer service. It starts with how the facility personnel answer the phone, the concern with which they greet you. It continues throughout your business with the storage company

Self Storage Industry Booms

This morning I came across yet another article on how great the Storage industry is doing. Despite (or maybe thanks to) a slumping economy and housing market . . . the self storage industry has seen nothing but growth. The report out today was released by ABC 7 News in San Jose, and focuses on a storage facility in the area that says business literally won't stop coming in. The article is a mixture of bleak news and optimism for the industry, saying:

"There are only 10 units out of 375 left here at Branham Self Storage and they are all smaller than a closet size space. No one wants the small units. The demand right now is for larger units - 10 by 14, essentially something that can fit the contents of a house.

"They're pretty much sold out, I'm positive that you check with anyone with the outside ones, that has the 10 by 20s and the 10 by 30s, they're gone. You're not going to find any of those," said Jeffries, owner of the business.

More on Mana Fine Arts

I mentioned last week that Moishe's sister company, Mana Fine Arts, provides quality fine art handling, moving and storage options. I've had several questions from potential clients about different facets of Mana, and thought I could answer a few frequently asked questions here on the Storage Blog. If you'd like to learn more about Mana's services, you can find it at their website, or at Moishe's new website.

First Question - Mana uses air-ride trucks . . . What does that mean exactly?

Air ride is a type of suspension system that is added to a truck's rear axles to help protect the load as the truck moves down the road. The truck is equipped with cushioning bags to absorb shock and bumps. An air ride system on a truck is easily identifiable by its black mushroom-like cushions just behind and between the rear tires.

Second Question - How big a deal is temperature control when storing and transporting fine art?

Many items can suffer when exposed to extreme hot or cold. Wooden antiques react terribly to freezing temperatures as the joints can expand and crack, while some paintings do not fare well in extreme heat as the canvas behind the paint can settle improperly. While normal changes in the weather usually do not pose a risk, extremes can be harmful. In order to keep any of your valuables from warping, it is important that climate control is employed for your relocation.

The chart tells customers how much they can expect to pay for storage spaces ranging in size from a small locker to a huge, wide-open room. We've also broken down any extraneous costs like moving pads and pad locks to give you a firm understanding of exactly how much you'll end up spending.
