It’s the shortest month of the year but February often feels never ending. That’s because it’s deep into the winter—it’s been cold for a few months already, the excitement of the holidays is over and for most there aren’t any notable days off until maybe Memorial Day. But there’s no reason we shouldn’t enjoy our second month of the year. There’s plenty to do and well, the weather ain’t so bad in our city this year. Here are five fun things you can participate in this February:
Chinese New Year
The year of the sheep begins on February 8 and there will be a parade on February 14 at 1 p.m. in Chinatown to celebrate. The parade of dancers and dragons starts off at the corner of Mott Street and Canal and ends at Grand and Forsythe. Then head on to one of many restaurants dotting the area and get yourself some authentic Chinese cuisine.
Although Mardi Gras is Tuesday February 9, there are events and celebrations around the city all of that week. Here’s a list of some of the soirees you can attend.
This year don’t watch the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on television. Head on over to piers 92/94 and Madison Square Garden and participate in the events in person. The show runs February 15 and 16 and tickets can be purchased online.
New York Fashion Week
Even if clothes aren’t your thing, it’s always fun to experience this bi-annual event where stylists, models, designers and editors gather for. NYFW begins on February 10 and runs through February 18. Here’s a list of events open to the public—some of which are free—and some other related ones around town.
The 10th annual Frigid Festival, held from February 6 till March 15, offers 30 shows in two theaters in East Village. The shows are affordable and you never know what to expect—that’s the beauty of fringe festivals.
