How to spend New Year’s Eve in New York City

If standing on the street at Times Square with thousands of others in the freezing temperatures—though this year the mercury might not even dip that low—to watch a ball drop is not your idea of a good time on New Year’s Eve, fear not because we have some suggestions for fun and mostly low key ways to bid adieu to 2015.

Watch Fireworks at Prospect Park

Start off the evening enjoying some live entertainment starting around 11 pm and then wait for the magic to light up the sky around Brooklyn’s Prospect Park at midnight. As with any other public event, arrive early to assure a spot. And be sure to snag a free cup of hot cocoa!

Take a Ride

Why wait until the first of the year to start your fitness resolution? Ride your bike or your skates from the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn (meet at the bridge entrance at 9:45 pm) to Central park with a group of other fitness folks just in time to watch the fireworks at the park. Then get ready to party with the other riders by the park’s Belvedere Castle. This event is free.

Enjoy a Quiet Dinner at Home

Who says you have to go out to have fun? Buy yourself a nice bottle of whatever you fancy, some nice cut of meat or exotic veggie and make a special dinner at home.  Better yet, order in a pizza or whatever it is that makes you happy.

Head to a Concert

There’s a plethora of concerts taking place in our great city on New Year’s Eve—from Phish at Madison Square Garden, to Jimmy Buffett at Barclays Center to lots of shows at smaller venues. Ring in the New Year by listening to your favorite tunes.

Get a Hotel Package

Hit up a hotel for a New Year’s Eve package and spend the eve with hundreds of your favorite strangers being merry. Try the Gansevoort Park Avenue and The Ides Bar at Wythe Hotel but rest assured there are many other options if these aren’t to your liking.

Get Out of Town

Rent a cabin or a house upstate or by the ocean with some friends and spend the evening playing games, making dinner and just hanging out. The best part? You don’t have to go anywhere but your bedroom once you’re done partying. Use VRBO or Airbnb to find suitable accommodations.
